Our new Newcastle 'Guerilla Art Gallery'

So here it is our new business premises and gallery space for the next 10 years... "The Tower". We have the whole south side of the Uptin House building which screams history starting off as a boarding school in the 1930's, followed by a bicycle factory, paint testing labs and eventually becoming a recording studio and band practice rooms which it remained for over 20 years.

One of the inital features of the premises which first attracted us is the extremely prominemnt tower/castle top room (formerly the head master office). This space we have retained as premisis for the 'Guerilla Art Gallery'. Lots of natural light piles in through our freshly double glazed windows, however the room retains a certain gothic resonance with some fantastic original stonework and a tall 13ft ceiling.

As the building is 4 stories high and far to large for only us we have rented a number of rooms out for artists studios and workshops alike. We have taken the top castle room and also the back yard for our gallery space.

The gallery is a perfectly sized and tranquil space that over looks a soon to be developed piece of wasteland that seems to have been adopted by the local skate and bmx community. The peace and quiet is regularly disrupted by the roar of the east coast main-line and the metro trains passing by. One of the three nearby bridges is the Byker bridge that splits newcastle east and west. With all the East coast trains, metro trains and busses passing our building every day it gives us a perfect platform for becoming the most prominent creative space in the region.

We have been painting and refurbishing the premisses for around 6 months now and have nearly completed work in the gallery space. I have been working closely with the previous gallery manager on our new website and hope to have it back in action very soon. Keep an eye out for updates on our twitter, flickr and facebook. Hope to see you soon!

Robert -Gallery Manager.
