Over the last 6 years we have seen some big ups and some big downs in the urban and graffiti art world. We have watched galleries and artists come and go. We have see graffiti artists hit front page headlines in newspapers and hitting colossal prices in the worlds auctions houses. We have seen artists such as Banksy get almost celebrity status. But we are finding our self asking our what good has come out of all of this?

We are seeing some terrible things coming from the larger galleries and artists. Dummy (fake) bidding on auction website and houses used too up hold fake and artificial market prices of artworks. We have see very heavily political artists
turn in to pussy cats once applied with a little bit of money. Not doing anything with there new found tabloid loving power.

With in the next 8 weeks we are going to be launching a new "Guerilla Art Gallery" website. We hope we can continue to up hold or market share in the urban art world while sticking to a building upon our moral values.

A FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTIST...

Q: Why the name Vango?
A: I chose the name Vango because one of my favourite artists is Vincent van Gogh and the word vango sounds like vandalise and go.

Q: How did it all start?
A: I am an anonymous street artist based in Ireland going by the name Vango. I've been interested in art since I was a kid and always loved street art.

Q: How did you get into graffiti art?
A: I was inspired by Banksy Nick Walker, Insect and most of the POW artists. The style of my street work is quite similar and recently I have found myself painting interesting faces and drippy portraits. I like to incorporate my political views into my street work and some of my canvas work.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: I hope to become a respected street and political artist and I will continue to sell my work and build my styles.

Q: When did you start working on the streets?
A: I started working on the streets a year ago after contemplating it for awhile. Where I live graffiti is not the done thing let alone political and outspoken art.

A: Well I'm definatly not a doctor and have no money to build an animal home (That was a very bad joke. Those who ever watched the cartoon will know what I mean).

A: ...Snugglish?!? No to be honest Im all about exploring and experimenting. Theres nothing too deep about my stuff. If I find something funny in my head I will try and bring it out in my work.

Cartrain's Demands...

Cartrain's Demands...

"For the safe return of Damien Hirsts pencils I would like my artworks back that Dacs and Hirst took off me in November. Its not a large demand he can have his pencils back when I get my artwork back. Dacs are now not taking any notice of my emails and I have asked nicely more than five times to try and resolve this matter. Hirst has until the end of this month to resolve this or on 31st of July the pencils will be sharpened. He has been warned."

Cartrain has stolen Damien Hirst's pencils - Theft Or Ransom?

16 year old graffiti artist Cartrain walked in to the Tate Briton (London) early last week and removed a packet of pencils from one of Damien Hirsts exhibits. Damien Hirst and Cartrain have a long standing rocky history. Earlier this year Hirst targeted the young graffiti artist Cartrain using Design and Artists Copyright Society (DAC's) for breach of copyright infringement on his latest series of artworks being sold vir 100artworks.com.

Cartrain is a 16 year artist whose work can be found mostly in backstreets of East London's Brick Lane and Old Street. Cartrain's left wing stencils and collages often contain recognisable figures such as George Bush and the Queen.

The box of very rare "FABER CASTELL dated 1990 Mongol 482 series" pencils were removed from Damien Hirst's "PHARMACY installation" by Cartrain on Thursday the 2nd July around 4pm. Not long after the pencils were removed from the installation a fake police 'appeal for assistance' posters appeared all around London.

This is the latest in a string of events surrounding the feud between the two artists. It began when Damien Hirst contracted the Design and Artists Copyright Society (DAC's) to send a string of legal letters to Cartrain's artdealer Tom Cuthbert at 100artworks.com in regards to Cartrain's series of artworks 'For the Love of God'. The online gallery surrendered the artworks to Damien Hirst with a verbal apology. The legal grounds in which Hirst requested the artworks are very questionable and the story spread across the internet like wild fire. It was reported by The Independent, The Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Daily Mail, Pop Bitch, Popbitch and many online blogs.

The urban art community are currently heavily debating the actions of Cartrain and what his next steps will be. Is this a random act of vandalism or a calculated guerilla art stunt? Only time will tell.

Q: Why the name Prole?
A: My name "Prole", comes from the word "Proletariat" that features heavily in 1984, the proles in 1984 could have established a better world if they revolted....but they never needed to revolt against the system because all the proles cared about were films, football, beer, and the lottery, which were all provided to them by the state, a bit like modern times. If only Orwell could have known how right on the mark he was.

Q: How did you learn your techniques?
A: Printing and stencil work are much the same bedfellows, you make up an image with solid colours forced through an open mesh for printing and you do the same but using spraypaint and holes cut in card. I'm a fully trained screen printer (large format, traditional hand, and textile), art was always a "part time" thing until i lost my job at the end of 2008. The chance arose to do what i wanted to do "full time" and being versed in the screen printing technique enables me to understand the layering of images to make the "bigger picture". This is a great help when working with stencils.

After dropping out of high school with not much more than a pencil and a maths book brimming with graffiti and slogans such as ‘FREE THE LEAF’, the DUK throwup was unleashed on the streets of East London, and refined more recently into a logo which still maintains the speed and energy of a graffiti style.

The DUK image is, as the white dove, an image of peace and freedom, and works are inspired by the mixing pot of styles encountered in culturally diverse pockets of London such as Brick Lane and Camden, and are usually playful, bright and colourful, designed to be in contrast with the gritty urban landscape, public walls and transport they are applied to…

Getting into a bit of hot water with the rozzers however, forced DUK to take a new approach, and the image is now predominantly exhibited through less offensive and more ‘temporary’ means, yet still up in the public domain…

Recent works have been prepared on smooth surfaces of all shapes and sizes, then dropped or drilled up, utilizing city streets as ‘temporary public galleries’, where if you like the work, then you can walk off with it!

It is that ‘by the people, for the people’ vibe that DUK enjoys most about street art and graffiti.

DUK is also passionately devoted to freedom of expression and the right for people to share their thoughts through speech and art without being censored or oppressed; a subject which is rarely touched and a right that most of us take for granted…

ErmOne is an active graffiti writer, originally from the north of England. He was committed to drawing and art from an early age. In 1997 he joined graffiti crew FMB. He has painted murals in countries such as France, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and many parts of South America, including Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Colombia, and was the first English writer to do so in several cities.

Hi influences include old school New York Graffiti, soul music and graphic design of the 70s and 80s.

He has exhibited and sold canvas work in Los Angeles (Blue Panther) and Brooklyn, New York (TrainCar Project), in 2007.

ErmOne now lives in Paris, working as an artist and graphic designer. He continues to evolve a highly personal graphic style.

A few words from the artist...
Q: How did you get into graffiti?
A: I'm into drawing since i first get a pencil in my hand. Started writing on walls with spraycan in 1994. After a few years of doing tags, outlines, steel & some streetpieces, from 2001 I started to paint 3D style.

Q: When did you turn to the gallery?
A: Since 2002 I'm also painting on boards, canvases, etc. I studied graphic design from 2001 to 2005. Did some exhibitions with my crew (CFS) and with some other artists.

Q: Tell us about your style?
A: Found this style i can call my own around 2004. These 3d forms are my evolution of letters. Other people may think these are flowers, bugs, shells or whatever but no, these are my letters. My other specialities are the 'humananimals'. I try to show the character of the human beings and situations through animal stereotypes. The connection between the human and the non-human animals. I want to tell something more with my characters not just to entertain.

CES53 started graffiti bombing in 1985, becoming the king of Europe in the early 90s. Not only because of his unsurpassed creativity but also because he was the one of the hardest working train bombers of his time, easily matching up with the New York kings of whom he painted with.

Picking up classical oil painting in 1987, in the nineties CES53 studied at an art academy. At the academy he refined his oil and acrylic techniques and expanded them stylistically into impressionistic and expressionistic works.

'Cartrain' at London 'Tate Modern' - Guerilla Graffiti Art Movie"

London graffiti artist Cartrain visited the Tate Modern this week...

Cartrain first started doing graffiti when he was 12 and soon came up with his now recognisable signature. The Artist is now taking the art, graffiti, and political world by storm. His work has started to appear across Central London. Brick Lane and Hackney, seem to be areas favoured by Cartrain. Banners carrying his distinctive emblem have been seen hanging from bridges and his stencils have been sprayed on walls opposite the Houses of Parliament. His work often depicts political figures including Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and George Bush. He also satirises the famous logos of the fast food companies KFC and McDonalds.

Cartrain pulled off a smiler stunt last year when he sneaked a fake exhibit into the British Museum. He produced a plate titled Nike Footwear (sic) and hung it in the museum while a friend filmed him in the act. The information accompanying it claimed it dated from 2800 BC and showed a man wearing trendy Nike footwear, "made for pennies and sold for pounds". The museum has insisted it was removed within a few hours, but Cartrain maintains it was on display for three days. The incident received coverage on the London Tonight television programme and a clip from the show, as well as Cartrain's original footage can be seen on Youtube. The stunt was reminiscent of the Bristol graffiti artist Banksy, someone Cartrain has always admired.

Nothing like a bit of good guerilla art.

Q: What's in your diary this week?
A: Recently I have started working in my new studio in the center of Amsterdam and I have been working on my canvas pieces. Finishing a canvas piece gives me a strange but addictive rush...
